Understanding mmWave Planning: A TechM & Infovista Perspective Whitepaper

By 2028, data traffic is expected to grow ~4x compared to data traffic in 2022 globally, driven in large part by the growing deployment of 5G networks and the use cases that 5G enables, such as ultra-high definition (UHD) videos, metaverse, real-time gaming, fixed wireless access (FWA), and multiple enterprise requirements.

However, with the current low and mid-band frequencies, with their limited bandwidth availability, unable to handle this huge data traffic growth, the introduction of mmWave frequency is becoming critical. These new radio networks enable higher channel bandwidths to be used in 5G networks and will play a key role in providing the required 5G network capacity.

Planning these 5G mmWave networks presents new challenges in RF design and requires new best practices to be adopted. In this technical white paper, Tech Mahindra and Infovista define best-in-case processes for designing 5G mmWave based on a clear understanding of:

  • mmWave characteristics and technology advancements including beam forming, dual connectivity, carrier aggregation, and integrated access backhaul and smart repeater solutions
  • mmWave RF planning strategies and scenarios, including FWA and small cells
  • mmWave planning tools and features, including what-if scenario planning and automatic site selection, 3D planning, advanced propagation modeling, virtualized and Open RAN architecture support, and high-resolution 3D geodata
