MIT Technology Review: How Remote Places Can Get Cellular Coverage by Doing It Themselves December 11th

Kurtis Heimerl, graduate student at UC Berkley, has crafted a way for consumers in regions that are untouched by mobile operators to gain connectivity. This “telco-in-a-box” approach consists of a small hydro-power generator, a satellite dish to fuel an internet connection, a base station for local cellular connection, a battery, a Wi-Fi router and a billing system. While the current grassroots set-up that Kurtis and his team created may not be a permanent solution, it shows that connectivity is possible for the hundreds of millions of people who live in remote areas.

Telecom Lead: Mobile network optimization, SON market to grow 13% in 2013 against 17% in 2012: Infonetics — December 14th

Infonetics recently released research about global mobile network optimization and self-organizing networks (SON), which found that more than 80 percent of global mobile operators currently use SON for 3G, HSPA and HSPA+ optimization. Further, Infonetics is predicting that this market will grow 13 percent in 2013, driven primarily by 3G network optimization. A long-term goal for this technology will be to create a zero-touch mobile network.

Light Reading: APAC Fuels 4G ActionDecember 18th

The APAC region is proving itself to be a main player in the 4G market, with growing mobile demand in China, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. China recently approved licenses for LTE and mobile operators to roll out 4G networks based on TDD and FDD LTE access infrastructure. Mobile operators in Japan and Taiwan are also rolling out FDD LTE networks. Singapore's big move in 2014 will likely be the introduction of SON capabilities.
