Unified Customer and Operations Visibility for Cloud Services Helps Capture and Retain High-Valued Customers
Overview
The drivers for cloud adoption within the enterprise present new and expanded opportunities for communications service providers (CSPs)—as well as new competition among traditional hosting providers and IT outsourcers—to “own” the customer. In an industry used to providing “five nines” availability to its customers with much of the core operational and technical foundation already in place, the addition of cloud services to a portfolio that already includes managed Virtual Private Networks (VPN) is a natural fit.
Industry analyst firm Analysys Mason estimates the global market for enterprise cloud services will total US$35.6 billion by 2015, and that CSPs will capture a 23% piece of the pie.
CSPs are already well-suited to provide these services. According to Steve Hilton, author of the Analysys Mason study, “The business model behind cloud services is similar to the business model behind established communications network services. A service provider amortizes its upfront data-center-related capital investment over a period of months and years, coinciding with the monthly fees charged to end-user enterprises for the use of the infrastructure. For a service provider, this model of business should be very comfortable.”
Unfortunately this promising new business model presents new challenges for CSPs, impacting operational processes and the customer reporting and operational capabilities required from their OSS and IT management platforms. As for many services, the long-term winners will be those who will be able to leverage proven service assurance capabilities to maintain operational excellence, forcing them to rethink their IT management strategy.
