From 2G to 4G/LTE: How to Optimize Next-Generation Mobile Networks

At LTE North America a few months ago, Infovista's CMO and head of Americas and APAC sales, Bernard Breton, caught up with RCR Wireless News. In the following video interview, building on a panel discussion he participated in at the event, Bernard offers some thoughts on how the telco industry has evolved from 2G to 4G/LTE and how mobile operators can prepare for what's ahead in terms of next-generation networks.

Previously, activities such as network planning and design and network optimization were managed in siloes. This worked during the era of 2G, but today's networks are much too complex for this to be successful. To grant subscribers the quality of experience (QoE) they've come to expect when using 4G/LTE, these processes must be fused together and controlled as one. Today's mobile operators have more options than ever to create such synergies –and do it cost-effectively.

By integrating live network data into network planning and optimization activities, mobile operators can gain an important end-to-end view of their networks. With this, for example, they can better understand subscriber usage behaviors, anticipate network traffic trends and quickly hone in on areas of quality of service (QoS) degradations in order to make timely troubleshooting decisions before end users are impacted. This kind of holistic visibility of network operations also ensures new technology investments, like small cells or Wi-Fi hotspots are accurately located and fully optimized.

The highly-accurate insight from unifying network planning, service assurance and network optimization processes will be critical as mobile operators begin to transition to 5G. It will also be essential, as we begin to see a wave of virtualized networks deployed throughout the rest of 2015, too. Without end-to-end visibility, mobile operators will not be able to remain agile enough to reap the rewards of network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), and ensure that subscriber QoE is not impacted in the process.
